After reading the articles I still feel technology should be a necessity in the classrooms despite some students limited access outside of school. I am not talking about anything drastic where work assigned can only be done on computers or with the use of technology. All students need to learn how to use technology. If we refuse to use it in classrooms because some students can't practice outside of class then we are hurting so many more students.
We are doing a disservice to students to not allow technology use. Everything today is run by technology pretty much and today's students need to understand that. Not just the students who have the use of technology outside of class. All the students need to understand technology and how it can help them.
To increase access for the underprivileged students I would have after school hours for use of computers. I would have an open door policy so I can help any students that get confused or aren't as fast learners. I would even try to fight for the use of lap tops or something that can be checked out through the library or something where the students could take it with them for a few days so all students have a chance to get used to today's technology. Also I would try to limit the amount of out of class work that requires the use of technology if need be.

Games
I do believe video games should be used in schools. It is something that grabs kids attention and can help improve learning. With that being said I feel it should only be used to compliment other teaching. It should in no way replace things we already do in the classroom.
What video games provide and what classrooms seem to lack a lot of the time is the challenge. Gee mentions a lot about what makes a good video game and how there is a challenge, customizable, creates your own story, and many other things. In my opinion it is that challenge that games provide that classrooms lack. For me the challenge is what keeps me coming back to the game. If school had a fun challenge I would keep coming back until I conquered it. Otherwise I am just bored.
I probably will try to incorporate video games into my classroom but if I am not going to the learning principle I would focus on the critical thinking and get students to explore different activities. I would focus on the challenge of each activity and set goals that are reachable in the physical education classroom but aren't too easy to get to. That way students will feel some sort of accomplishment when they acheive the goals.

Wikipedia
I maybe use Wikipedia for research 50% of the time. Ever since I found out it was a website anyone could post on I probably have started using it less. Now when I do my research online the very first thing I do is Google the topic and try to see what web pages it brings up. I like to see if the page has an author but if not I make sure it has a date and some sort of supervisor or credible source backing it up.
As a teacher I would have to say I wouldn't allow Wikipedia as a source. If you look at most Wikipedia pages you can see sources are cited. If a student is going to go through the effort to find the information on a Wikipedia page they should be able to use the references from the original source and check to see if the information is indeed accurate. This article has a point in stating that there is more information on Wikipedia than an encyclopedia. You can find all sorts of off the wall stuff. The thing is that the people who post on there get their information from somewhere. Wherever that information comes from it is accessible and that means whoever is doing the research needs to find similar or the same credible sources. The article supports my position I feel.

Anyone can make a website now. Websites need to have a credible author or supervisor or editor. Something that gives the credentials and origin of the information is important. These are all key as well as if the paper is opinionated or not. Articles should argue both sides and have a good amount of facts over opinions. Cell Phones In School
I would have to say I agree with the side that is against cell phones in the classroom. I believe they have no place in helping out with education. There are plenty of other smart devices that benefit student learning with less of a distraction than cell phones. Graphing calculators, laptops, even the use of classroom ipods for videos and other features they have. I feel when you allow a cell phone to be openly used into a classroom you allow for all kinds of distractions that can be more harmful to learning than good. With the use of cell phones you can look like you are doing your work but you could really be sending text messages or instant messages or even playing games.
My opinion was the same before as it was after reading the articles. I listened to the points on the other side but none of them seemed strong enough to get me to want to allow cell phones in my classroom. My cell phone policy someday will be simple. I won’t allow them to be used in class. Students can have them on them but they better be on silent or vibrate. The only time I would allow it is if I needed to check something online during a class and a student’s cell phone allowed the best opportunity for finding that out. Consequences for not following the rules would start out with a verbal warning. From there I would confiscate the phone. If the student still won’t comply I’ll start sending them to the principal and getting the parents involved.

Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is the use of any technology source in an effore to put down or harm someone else emotionally. It is something that is problematice. I have been a part of it to a certain extent without knowing it. I have taken part in sports forums talking trash to other people. Some people take it too far though.
Schools face this growing problem because students are more and more technology savvy. It is a lot easier to put down someone using technology and not face any of the consuequences you would face if you did it in person. It is really hard to regulate legally also. The question is when do you regulate it? The only thing you can do is start having regulation for websites and have them closely monitored to kick people off who break the rules. Since it is hard to do this we need to try and do something in the schools about this. You can't really punish students for what takes place out of class but we need to try and identify any cyberbullying as it occurs and talk to the students to try and squash it. Also we need to educate students starting when they're young about cyberbullying and let them know its not accepted.
In my classroom I will have an open door policy. I will tell any student to come talk to me about any issues regarding cyberbullying or bullying in any form. First step would be to talk to the students who are at fault. If it continues my next step would be to talk to the parents. Social Networking
I really didn't expect to find out much when I first googled myself. I actually thought it was a little silly. There really is more out there about you then you know apparently. Not saying that I have done stuff to be ashamed of that is on the web but using the PIPL search engine I actually found my court record for my seat belt ticket in California. the link is: http://www.glenncourt.ca.gov/online_index/CMSCaseDisplay.cfm?URLCaseNumber=ST080705. It's crazy to think you can find that so easily.
When I think back about my life there is a lot I have changed and even some I still want to change. That is all part of growing up. I don't want to take back anything I've done because it has made me who I am today. I at times was rebellious early on in college and now I can't even see myself being the way I was. As far as a teacher being held to community standards as to what they have done I don't know about that. It depends on the severity of the situation. I feel like one thing that needs to be understood is that no one is perfect and we all make mistakes and have our regrets.
I feel like the most important thing I took from the article is that nothing in our lives is really private when it comes to technology. For instance the teacher who's partner posted artistic nude photo's on the web. Something like this which may seem small at first can have lasting effects. In her case she lost her job.
In today's society I need to be more consciencous about how I live my life and what I put on the internet. It is all about being careful. If its something you wouldn't want others to know about you or see you do then it probably is a good thing to avoid.

Marc Prensky Blog
Marc Prensky Blog
After reading the Marc Prensky articles I would have to consider myself mostly a digital native. Maybe a little bit of a digital immigrant because I didn’t grow up with video games or a computer as a kid but I picked all of it up really fast. I started young on computers and have been using them ever since. In Prensky’s Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants article he explains immigrants as “those who were born into the digital world but have, at some later point in our lives, become fascinated by and adopted many or most aspects of the new technology are, and always will be compared to them, Digital Immigrants.” It later talks about the immigrants having an accent which are little signs that show their old style of learning a little. I think I might have a bit of an accent the way Prensky describes.
My first experience with computers in the classroom was back in grade school at some point. I don’t exactly remember the grade level. It started with using email and learning how to type. I later went to a summer computer camp because I enjoyed computers so much. I learned how to use different programs to do certain projects with. I even learned how to surf the world wide web. This learning continued as I kept using computers in class through the end of grade school.
I was hooked at this point. I talked my mom into getting a computer for the house and I went on to take advanced computers in middle school. At this point I was challenged greatly. I had to learn a whole bunch of new stuff. As mentioned in the articles though I was engaged and really interested in learning more. These experiences have really shaped my learning and have helped me become somewhat computer savvy today.
I do see myself using more technology in my classroom. The articles have made a valid point and it seems like you couldn’t teach a class without some use of technology. As it says in the article Engage Me or Enrage Me, “Students today have all kinds of things in their lives that are engaging.” If this is the case then naturally students will be bored in class. They get accused of having short attention spans even. Prensky goes on to say “Students certainly don’t have short attention spans for their games, moves, music or internet surfing.” It’s not that they have a short attention span. It is because we need to make class more engaging built around the students interests.
As a future PE teacher I have already seen the use of video games such as Dance Dance Revolution or even Nintendo WII games such as WII Fit or WII Sports. It’s a great way to get kids excited for exercise. The use of technology is more important now than ever. Every teacher should start finding ways to incorporate it into their classrooms.

Introduction

Hello everyone,
For those of you who don't know already my name is Kyle Hoelzer. I am getting my endorsements in physical education and health. My main goal with this is to be a PE teacher and coach. For my favorite animal I would have to say it would be a dog. If I had to pick a favorite dog I would say I've always wanted a beagle. I think they're cute and not too big or small. Just a little noisy at times. So I hope to own one someday.
